chocolate buttercream recipe
This is a simple recipe for Chocolate Buttercream Frosting. This recipe is a modified version of my buttercream frosting. It’s rich and silky!
Basic ingredients for chocolate buttercream recipe
- One cup unsalted butter
- 226g 3/5 cups powdered sugar
- 435g 2/3 Cup cocoa powder
- 1/8-1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 3-4 Tablespoons milk or heavy cream plus any additional as required. A pinch of espresso powder is also a great addition to this recipe

- First of all, Place butter in a bowl of a stand mixer or large bowl with an electric mixer. Now Beat on low speed until smooth and creamy. Scrape down the bowl’s sides and bottom.
- Mix 2 cups (250g), powdered sugar, cocoa pot, vanilla extract, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 3 Tablespoons heavy cream.
- Turn mixer on low speed. Mix until combined. Gradually add the remaining powdered sugar.
- You may notice that the icing appears dry. This is normal. Begin by setting the mixer at low speed and slowly increasing speed to medium-high.
- Continue beating for several seconds until each Tablespoon of cream is incorporated into the batter. Continue adding cream until the batter is smooth and pipeable. I recommend frosting or piping your cupcakes immediately. You can store buttercream in the post below.
Notes This recipe can be made with either Dutch or natural unsweetened cocoa powder.
